Dr Hayley Clements is a senior researcher at the African Wildlife Economy Institute and the Centre for Sustainability Transitions, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the University of Helsinki, Finland. Her interdisciplinary research explores how African biodiversity connects to human well-being, and the role of wildlife economies in achieving just and sustainable development. She is currently leading a research program on the role of sustainable use in supporting biodiversity conservation, people and the economy in southern Africa. She is the inaugural recipient of the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant, for a project that mobilized 200 African biodiversity experts to map the continent’s remaining biodiversity intactness and identify opportunities for investment.
